The Top PS4 Games For Kids

Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition

Minecraft Playstation 4 Edition

  • Great, colorful visuals.
  • Constructing is absolutely enjoyable.
  • Vast worlds to explore.
  • Can lead to countless hours of playing (which may be good for some).

Content Rating: 7+
Release Date: May 2009
Developers: Mojang, XBOX Game Studios
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Minecraft: Playstation 4 Edition is our top pick in this list. Just like recommended Fortnite gaming equipment, this title is very, very popular (and we mean it). The title is more than simply building and digging to shove off zombies. It eliminates barriers allowing your kids to experience different worlds to create and explore.

The horizon is massive and has sharper visuals making it a great version of Minecraft. The game drops the player into a vast world and is given a map. Your imagination is the only limit to this video game.

The first thing your kids should do is to explore the surroundings and find the nearest pile of trees to chop off wood for construction. The initial tools provided include a wooden pickaxe or a standard axe for grabbing coal, ore, or lumber.

It wouldn’t take a while to upgrade to better tools and you’ll later turn to iron to create more efficient equipment for your needs. Crafting yourself a sword would be an excellent decision as monsters lurk around the darkness.

Your kids will experience satisfaction with Minecraft’s construction. Players will have to start small by creating a shack made of wood. As you go through the game, you can create more substantial establishments. The main character can create tree houses, underground lairs, big buildings, and entire grand houses. Your children’s imagination will be tested and their vision will result in great pride for their work.

Minecraft’s highlights don’t end with exploring the vast worlds and constructing buildings. You can also interact with your surroundings. For instance, once you locate a neighboring village, you can trade with its AI-generated villagers. You can also traverse through a desert and go through deadly traps to find a treasure.

We believe that Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition is better for kids compared to its PC counterpart. It has a great tutorial allowing you to learn the game painlessly. Tips pop up to help you learn about a tool or material and their uses. To find information on something you’re curious about, you simply press the button to know more.

With ample activities to do, your kids will enjoy different tasks and will keep coming back for more fun. Regardless of how you enjoy the building game, whether it be through construction or through side quests, you and your kids will love playing Minecraft to the core.

Ratchet & Clank

Ratchet & Clank

  • Beautiful, chaotic effects during battle.
  • Great storyline.
  • Excellent line-up of entertaining weapons.
  • You’ll find empty spots when revisiting planets.

Content Rating: 7+
Release Date: April 2016
Developer: Insomniac Games
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Ratchet & Clank is one of the most creative and charming adventure games for kids. You come across as a player and his robotic pal moving from one world to another throughout the entire galaxy. It can be described as a game with a hilarious write-up, amazing worlds, and a great arsenal of weapons.

It pulls up the greatest parts of its predecessor while adding a lot of enhancements making the game enjoyable for ages 7 and up. The title has amazing character models, vistas, and lighting which all come together to create beautiful animated visuals.

One thing your kids will enjoy is the effects that pop up during a battle. Robot pieces scatter around while your weapons crack like fireworks. The money that comes from the fallen enemies magnet towards Ratchet.

The story is well-written and is rife with personality and humor that can be entertaining for both kids and adults. Ratchet & Clank has a lineup of weapons that is full of surprises and will surely make your kid jump for more. These amazing weapons can level up as you progress throughout the game.

Revisiting planets can be done once you progress. This will allow you to check out areas you may not have explored due to limited capabilities in the past. The downside is you’ll find a stretch of environment that has nothing interesting left. Kids may not be encouraged to go back if the action is cut off after having passed through a world.

Overall, Ratchet & Clank is a great game for kids allowing them to prep for an adventure they’ve never gone through before. It’s full of gameplay twists allowing you to explore your surroundings more thoroughly after you’ve acquired certain weapons and equipment.

Overcooked! 2

Overcooked 2

  • Creative kitchens and terrains.
  • A lot of new recipes.

  • May be a bit challenging or frustrating for kids.

Content Rating: 3+
Release Date: August 2018
Developers: Team17, Ghost Town Games
Publisher: Team17

Overcooked! 2 offers a fun cooking experience for your little would-be chefs. The main principle of the game is the same as its predecessor. You’re a tiny, chubby chef that tries to overcome obstacles to make sure dishes are served.

The meals have to be processed, chopped, steamed, fried, prepped, and served. And, you have to make sure you go through the obstacles along the way. The kitchens in Overcooked! 2 are amazingly creative.

The story revolves around travelling through Onion Kingdom to save the citizens from the Unbread. The environment is very interactive pushing you through new (and even hidden) levels. Discovering brand new kitchens and cooking a variety of recipes are challenging, yet enjoyable.

The obstacles are quite tricky as you may see yourself falling down chasms while preparing your dishes. You also work in a timed setting while you prepare dishes, move through the terrain, and strive your way around the kitchen layout.

The game is seriously better than its predecessor (although we can say both are fun to play with). It has a lot of creative levels, better visuals, and cute little chefs. And, your kids will have fun sizzling out the dishes to defeat the Unbread.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers

Lego Marvel's Avengers

  • Appealing settings.
  • Excellent co-op combination moves.
  • Incoherent story.
  • Seemingly repetitive characters.

Content Rating: 7+
Release Date: January 2016
Developers: TT Games, Traveller’s Tales, Feral Interactive, TT Fusion
Publishers: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Feral Interactive

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers will definitely be a hit to you and your kids especially if you use physical lego blocks to bond. You can discover over 100 characters though some are seemingly repetitive. If your children have played PS4 LEGO games before, they’ll notice that it’s quite similar to the previous series of titles.

It is jam-packed with fun moments and is one of the top games in the LEGO action adventure genre for kids. There’s plenty of content focused on solving puzzles. You also have to fight your way against enemies by using the unique abilities of the characters.

The best thing about LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is most of its puzzles are easy to solve. That may not be the best scenario for adults, but is excellent for kids who don’t have enough patience to think about mind-boggling tasks.

Combats are amazing allowing unique moves by combining the skills of two different characters. Your kids can discover these combinations by themselves using their imagination to win against a horde of enemies.

Undeniably, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is absolutely fun. The main story follows events from Avengers films and puts a kid-friendly twist to them. Players can also explore other sections of the open world. For instance, New York is packed with a lot of tasks to accomplish.

The appeal of this game to your kid will depend on his or her passion for Marvel characters. It’s highly-detailed and offers unique, new characters to choose from. The title is fast-paced in nature and would definitely catch the hearts of those who love the franchise.

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

  • Beautiful, colorful visuals.
  • Great classic controls of Spyro.

  • Frustrating camera issues.
  • Slow loading times.

Content Rating: 10+
Release Date: November 2018
Developers: Toys For Bob, Insomniac Games, Iron Galaxy
Publisher: Activision

As a kid, you may have played Spyro with the cute little dragon leaping around colorful surroundings. It’s no surprise that your children will love the amazing adventure of this lovely, violet-colored creature.

Similar to previous titles, Spyro leaps, glides, charges, and moves around in the same manner. However, the controls are perfected in Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Animations are much more delightful and the worlds are definitely pleasing to a child’s eyes.

Levels are improved with clouds having stunning horizons and icy environments possessing great, detailed visuals. The only thing we noticed is its slow load times and frustrating camera issues.

The graphics are superb allowing you to reminisce childhood memories in a different way — we’re referring to richer, higher-definition visuals. Your kids will have to navigate worlds and solve puzzles to progress through the game. Collecting gems, idols, and eggs will help you through your quests.

Grab your PS4 headsets with Spyro Reignited Trilogy as you’re in for a good mood. The soundtrack is amazing as well with fuller instrumentation giving your kids a more immersive experience while playing. As an adult, it would be easy to finish the adventures. But, of course, your kids will take a longer time doing it. Still, they will enjoy controlling the cute dragon all around while solving challenges.

It’s safe to say that Spyro Reignited Trilogy truly “reignites” our moments in the past. And, you wouldn’t want your kids to miss all those precious memories. You can relive them with your child by taking turns playing this genius masterpiece.

Sonic Mania Plus

Sonic Mania Plus

  • Rewards you for progressing through the game.
  • Exhilarating sense of speed.
  • Meticulously-designed zones.
  • Lacking in new content.

Content Rating:
Release Date: July 2018
Developer: PagodaWest Games, Headcannon
Publisher: Sega

Sonic Mania Plus is another great PS4 game for kids who can experience the exhilarating speed of the main character and his friends. Push the drawing tablets aside and let them experience the same enjoyment you did as a child with this classic title.

The presentation of this game is intoxicating with colorful 2D visuals and a pop soundtrack inspired by the ‘90s. Fans of this blue hedgehog franchise will definitely be excited with the brand new game.

Sonic Mania Plus takes place after Sonic & Knuckles and is now on another battle against Dr. Eggman. At this point, you’re on a quest to grab a strange emerald artifact. Your enemy, the genius scientist, isn’t without allies. He enlisted the help of Eggrobros to help you combat more challenges along the way.

This title has stunning music and visuals with the presentation reminiscent of its predecessors. There’s a higher level of detail and graphical quality coupled with new effects and music tracks. Both visuals and sounds work together to create a game that evokes the memories of playing the earlier version of Sonic.

The controls are similar to that of the classic Sonic games. Three characters can be played, Sonic, Knuckles, or Tails. The feel of every character is different from each other. However, it is still familiar if you have played the preceding titles. A new move called Drop Dash allows Sonic to roll forward in a speedy fashion after jumping. It’s a great way to speed up or even avoid danger.

Similar to Sonic 3, each level will end with a boss fight that varies in level of difficulty. There are a lot of challenging battles that require advanced strategies on our part. The boss section of each level will surely have your kids challenged and entertained in various ways.

LittleBigPlanet 3

Littlebigplanet 3

  • Visuals look perfect on the PS4.
  • Great new characters and toys.
  • Create mode offers endless possibilities.
  • Adventure mode’s checkpoint system is frustrating.

Content Rating: 7+
Release Date: November 2014
Developer: Sumo Digital
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

LittleBigPlanet 3 is an adventure game where you play as Sackboy against an enemy that wants to destroy Craftworld. Just like a wood MacBook Pro case, the main protagonist is brown in color and exudes an earthy feel. The universe is fitting for kids who’d be excited to see an environment made from crafts out of their grandma’s cabinet.

Once the enemies unleash their chaotic power, Sackboy will enlist recruits including Oddsock, Swoop, and Toggle. The quartet will work together to rescue Newton and make sure enemies (the Titans) are defeated.

The entire campaign of LittleBigPlanet 3 is categorized into four different hubs. Players must unlock the characters as you work your way through different levels. Your children will love this fairytale story as characters look very cute and adorable. Once unlocked, these characters can be used on different levels within the hub world they are assigned to.

The disappointing thing in this title is the use of characters are limited. You can’t choose another character for certain levels. However, in creation mode, you can use more than one character making it less upsetting.

As you get new items, the next levels become more challenging. The game will force your kids to pay attention. It will even allow them to learn through trial-and-error. Everything is worth it as you can feel the sense of satisfaction after finishing levels.

The world of LittleBigPlanet 3 is beautifully designed and well-detailed. You can see the Russian dolls perfectly created while the queen’s robe has delicate feathers. Within this planet, you can find NPCs that provide side quests and mini games. These offer great rewards you can use to brighten up your characters and even make them more powerful.

Similar to the previous titles, LittleBigPlanet 3 allows you to create levels where imagination is the only limit. There are a roster of tools you can tinker with to make entire maps, individual levels, and modify spaces to make them inviting (or challenging).

Again, the title has a magnificent soundtrack that will have your kids plunge deep into the idiosyncrasies of the game. Although it’s a bit difficult compared to its predecessors, it makes up for it by giving more tools and more paths to choose from.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy

  • Beautifully-crafted levels.
  • Improved save system.
  • Controls don’t feel precise.

Content Rating: 10+
Release Date: June 2017
Developers: Vicarious Visions, Toys For Bob, Iron Galaxy
Publishers: Activision, Activision Blizzard, Sony Interactive Entertainment

Crash resonated with its audience because of diverse surroundings and eloquent characters. This game gives us the chance to revisit the past three titles with enhanced visuals allowing your kids to play in style.

Creatures and environments look more realistic warped into a cartoon-ish world. The game is pleasing to look at and you’ll definitely appreciate the lengths they’ve gone through to make it appear better on your gaming monitors.

However, playing it can give mixed reactions. The opponents don’t react and adapt to your movements as they tend to follow predetermined loops. A lot of the obstacles are disappointing with the stiff gameplay. One-hit deaths make it even more disheartening as you may find challenges to be very difficult.

But not every challenge is insanely hard as there are some modest ones great for casual fun. Flying through the environment is a satisfying ride as you can navigate through different scenarios. You can go through a sewer at one point in time and then jet set through the Great Wall of China.

Once the three games are combined together, you might rush through a sense of nostalgia. The developers succeeded in enhancing the visuals while preserving its appeal that made it popular in the past. It’s easy to say that when you and your kids play this game, you’ll definitely have them rolling over due to excitement.

Tearaway Unfolded

Tearaway Unfolded

  • Stunning art challenges.
  • Use of DualShock 4.

  • Fights can be repetitive.

Content Rating: All Ages
Release Date: September 2015
Developers: Media Molecule, Tarsier Studios
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Tearaway Unfolded has expanded environments that are made beautiful and bustling. Your kids will experience the quirks of the DualShock 4 in new and exciting ways. It offers players with loads of new content displayed in a unique style that looks amazing.

If you’re using a big screen with a high resolution, you will appreciate the entire world of visuals by Tearaway Unfolded. You can work your way around an environment that is shaped by paper, scissors, and glue.

It’s obvious that the biggest highlight of Tearaway Unfolded is creativity with its arts and crafts theme. Sometimes, you are tasked to design tiny details of the landscape. For instance, you may be asked to craft a sublime crown or even outline a snowflake. This is made possible by using the DualShock touchpad. Once you see your designs come to life, you will feel a sense of great satisfaction.

Tearaway Unfolded gives an exciting world where the kids can be creative and play with their imagination. You’re working on a bigger environment with a higher budget. Areas are given more detail and depth. Plus, you have new areas you can explore ranging from laboratories to moors and swamps.

We were disappointed about some of the battles that take place in this title. Enemies just ambush you in certain locations where you will be boxed in. And, you must defeat horde after horde of enemies. The nature of these battles make it more cumbersome than fun to play with.

Tearaway Unfolded provides a distinctive experience that is very fun and observes creativity. As you progress through the game, you are tasked to do unique things that other titles don’t offer. New areas are fresh and exciting with this bold adaptation of the original.

Mega Man 11

Mega Man 11

  • Preserves the franchise’ visual feel with improvements.
  • Better items and upgrades.
  • Stages are unusually long.

Content Rating: 7+
Release Date: September 2018
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom, Capcom USA Inc., Editions Pix’n Love

Mega Man 11 is similar to its predecessors where you have to go to eight different levels depending on the order you choose. It is important to claim the weapons in these levels so you can use them to defeat other bosses. When the eight enemy robots are defeated, you will go to a fortress to have your final showdown.

This time though, the protagonist is equipped with the Double Gear System. This enables you to increase the power of your weapons. Plus, it allows the hero to slow down the surroundings for a certain period of time.

Other items can be used with different capabilities. The Power Gear increases the deadly power of your weapons. On the other hand, the Speed Gear can be used to finish tasks where timing is crucial. Again, the effect will last for a limited time only and there’s a cooldown period you have to wait for to reuse it again.

You’ll notice that this title manages to preserve the charm and feel of its visuals. There’s quite a bit of humor added to it with certain character expressions being weird or funny. The different stages have cute robot enemies that will have your kids smirking for joy.

Mega Man 11’s game experience in the early stages can be a challenging one. You have to go through trial-and-error for certain obstacles and re-do the stage all over again to come out successful.

This title is definitely a good action game your kids can identify with. But it’s not the best when compared to other games in the franchise. Still, it offers quirky gimmicks that provide a retro feel.

de Blob 2

De Blob 2

  • Charming and appeals to all ages.
  • Good gameplay.
  • Good fit for platformers.

  • Difficult to work with the camera.
  • Some details are blurry.

Content Rating: 10+
Release Date: February 2011
Developers: Blue Tongue Entertainment, Blitworks, Halfbrick Studios
Publishers: THQ, THQ Nordic

There’s a lot to like about de Blob 2. Your kids will find it irresistible with its sense of humor and bubbly creative art. It’s a family-friendly game where you don’t have to be familiar with the predecessor just to get by.

Your enemy is the evil group Inkies founded by the leader Comrade Black. The color of the entire city has been sucked out by the antagonist and it’s up to you to paint the entire place back.

Blob is a memorable hero given that he’s a big globule of goo. Other characters are virtually the same including Jigglypuffy and Kirby. You will notice that in the game everything jiggles or jumps showcasing fluid visuals. The cut scenes are amazing and adds sheer excellence with its giggly cuteness.

The gameplay is quite fun as it asks players to simply absorb colors and paint them on the landscape. One thing you have to master is how to mix colors while making a judgment call on your route to overcome obstacles.

There’s an overall time limit pushing you to a challenge. Time increase items can be found all throughout the stages. However, you still have infinite “continues” from the save point.

All in all, de Blob 2 is very charming and is a straightforward game that appeals to all ages. Everything is bright, colorful, and bubbly making it great for kids that are casual players who simply want to have fun.

Carnival Games

Carnival Games

  • Great variety of mini games.
  • Excellent to play with friends.
  • Humorous presentation.
  • Tedious to unlock stuff.
  • Some mini games have frustrating controls.

Content Rating: 10+
Release Date: August 2007
Developer: Cat Daddy Games
Publisher: Global Star Software, 2K Games

Carnival Games is an amazing, family-friendly game that can be played with the PS4. it offers 20 different mini games that are replicas of your favorite attractions at the “carnival.” The difference may be in the “assumption” that these games aren’t rigged.

The visuals are intentionally made cheesy to appeal to all ages and exude a carnival-like nature. It’s made for pure enjoyment as opposed to realistic-looking graphics of other kid-friendly games.

Once you start to play the title, you can only choose from a few options. At the end of these mini games, you can get carnival tickets and these can be exchanged for more mini games to take part in.

A few of the miniature games enable you to hit home runs, go for ring toss, and even race pigs. There are options to play solo, take part in a tournament, or compete with others in a whole minigame tournament.

The problem with the ticket system is that it requires a massive number of tickets just to unlock the game. Mini games give you an average of 4 tickets after successful completion. And, it may require about 700 tickets to unlock one mini game. This can be frustrating for some kids. Although, it still mimics the nature of a real carnival and visuals are meant to entertain and not impress the players.

NBA 2K20

Nba 2k20

  • Stunning graphical improvements.
  • Excellent gameplay.
  • Fun diversions.

  • MyPlayer Builder is limiting.

Content Rating: All Ages
Release Date: August 2019
Developer: Visual Concepts
Publisher: 2K Games, 2K Sports

When it comes to gameplay NBA 2K20 delivers and it delivers exceptionally well. The creators paid a lot of attention to the onboarding process. This means the tutorials are very effective giving you the refreshers on both basics and advanced maneuvers. Your basketball-loving kids can go through the game’s training mode at their own pace.

The action on-court is slick with improved overall visuals and footwork. The presentation is massively impressive as well making it one of the most convincing sports games you can have for PS4.

The tiny, unnoticeable touches provide a realistic basketball gaming experience. For instance, your teammates can help you go back to the court if you find yourself sitting on the bench. Plus, the commentary is better compared to other franchises available in the market.

The players are more unique allowing you to spot the difference among NBA superstars. In addition, the MyCareer mode allows you to make your own superstar working your way towards winning the ultimate NBA championship.

The absurd apparently high-budget production of NBA 2K20 makes it a seriously realistic sports game compared to others. The improvements make it a great simulation for one of the most loved sports in the entire world.

It has a roster of various options and modes plus an exceptionally-written single player campaign — all of these work together to keep your kid entertained for hours. The microtransaction present is the only downside we can see. Apart from that, NBA 2K20 will surely be a fitting game worthy of your time and attention.

Just Dance 2020

Just Dance 2020

  • Diverse song list.
  • All-Stars Mode is excellently crafted.
  • Missing a lot of features from predecessors.

Content Rating: 3+
Release Date: November 2019
Developer: Ubisoft, Ubisoft Paris, Ubisoft Shanghai, Ubisoft Pune
Publisher: Ubisoft

In its 10th year, Just Dance 2020 has brought a massive collection of songs and choreography. The dance moves range from silly, humorous actions to professional, sweat-inducing ones. Although easier said than done, you can opt for different routines in their roster.

The tracks are actually sorted on their level of difficulty. And, you can unlock additional routines by playing a track for x number of times or by attaining a particular score. This time, the song list is amazing with international tracks from K-pop groups and even HIspanic artists.

Your kids will love playing Just Dance 2020 as it includes Daddy Shark and Into The Unknown from Frozen 2. In this game, we have a new mode called All Stars where you have to follow the coach while he journeys through various planets to attend a party.

The criticism we find with Just Dance 2020 is its massive line of features that compromised others. Still, this is a fun game to play, especially if your kids love to dance to music. If you’re a parent, you can go gaga with your kids over the songs and routines too!
