Best Motherboard For Ryzen 7 2700x
Best Motherboard For Ryzen 7 2700x

The AMD Ryzen 7 2700X may be a previous-generation processor, but it is still one of the most powerful gaming processors ever manufactured. It has an excellent price to performance ratio while offering more threads than its direct competitor at a lower price. However, you are going to need the right motherboard to make the most of its power.

Like choosing a motherboard for Ryzen 5 3600, choosing the best motherboard for Ryzen 7 2700X takes a lot of consideration. Aside from ensuring compatibility, you must make sure that it can support the amount of memory necessary for your processor. You should also take into account other features like connectivity ports, storage slots, and expansion slots based on your demands.

If you don’t want to go through the tedious process of researching for the ideal motherboard, check out our list of the finest chipsets on the market. We’re sure you’re going to find one that’ll make a great companion to your new processor.

Breaking Down the Gaming Performance of the Ryzen 7 2700x

With the hottest lineup of CPUs currently on the market, AMD has repeatedly released increasingly impressive chips within their Ryzen series. Attempting to consistently stay one step ahead of the Intel competition, the Ryzen 7 2700x is another iteration of the multiple cores and powerful threaded performance we’ve come to expect since the chipset overhaul in early 2017.

A member of the smaller and more powerful Gen 2 chipset series, the Ryzen 7 2700x finds itself comfortably in the high performing sector while also remaining relatively consumer-friendly in comparison to the top of the line Threadripper series. Introduced in April of 2018, it features a base speed coming in at 3.7 GHz with precision boost up to 4.3 GHz. Supporting DDR4-2933 dual-channel memory, it is bundled with the Wraith Prism, a high-performing fully RGB cooler from AMD.

We’ll touch on the specs for the 2700x and compare it to its “little brother” the 2700 and how they stack up in gaming performance.

Specifications:

Threads: 16 | Cores: 8 | Clock Speed: 3.7 GHz | Performance Boost 2 Clock Speed: 4.3 GHz

Universally compatible with AM4 socket motherbaords, the Ryzen 7 2700x is an upgraded chip in comparison to the previous base Ryzen 7 2700. Featuring higher base and overclocking speeds, the base 3.7 GHz can top out at 4.3 GHz through Performance Boost 2 with a thermal pull of 105 W. Built with the 12nm Zen+ architecture, this smaller design provides a significant increase in performance while maintaining the same power draw at similar speeds.

While previously AMD would fall short in mullti-core performance in comparison to its Intel counterpart, the Ryzen 7 2700x trumps the competition in both single core and and multi-core performance for not only a great gaming experience, but speedier encoding and rendering with outside applications.

Although the power consumption is relative to similar chips, it does carry quite a heavy increase in comparison to some of the lower end chips throughout the Ryzen 7 lineup.

The X370 chipset generally has a better overclocking potential than the newer B450. If you want to save a few bucks and still have the capacity to overclock your processor, this board is a smart option.

Comparing the Ryzen 7 2700 to the 2700x

Specs of 2700 vs 2700x

Threads: 16 > 16
Cores: 8 > 8
Clock Speed: 3.2 GHz > 3.7 GHz
Performance Boost 2 Clock Speed: 4.1 GHz > 4.3 GHz

While similar, there are slight differences between the Ryzen 7 2700 and the Ryzen 7 2700x that you’ll find most notable when it comes time for intensive gaming. While the barebones upgrade of base speed from 3.2 GHz to 3.7 GHz is an obvious upgrade, this will become evident in single core performance between the two chips.

Additionally, strenuous multi-core applications will see improved performance with the second iteration of the 2700x. Featuring a stronger ability for overclocking with the 2700x reaching 4.3 GHz, the option to squeeze out better performance for more demanding gaming titles will prove the 2700x to be a better fit for those looking to game at max visual settings and resultions.

One downside for the higher end 2700x, however, is the significant increase in power consumption. With a thermal design point of 65 W on the 2700, this is greatly increased with the 2700x going all the way to 105 W.

While this may seem obvious, with the more powerful chip requiring a stronger draw, if you aren’t in need for the increased overclocking you may look toward the cheaper Ryzen 7 2700 base chip.

The last significant difference between the two chips actually lies with the additional peripherals shipped with the CPU. As we previously mentioned, the 2700x is shipped with the Wraith Prism RGB cooler, which is logically warranted due to the increased performance. The base 2700 lacks the addition of the cooler, so keep this in mind if you are upgrading your system or building from scratch.

How is the Gaming Performance with the Ryzen 7 2700x?

As mentioned above, the Ryzen 7 2700x finds itself in the sweet spot for value while also containing the power and punch needed for high-end PC builds without venturing all the way into the Threadripper end of the Ryzen lineup. Being bundled with the Wraith cooler is also a nice bonus, especially if you had plans to implement a similar cooler into your PC.

With the ability to overclock all the way to 4.3 GHz, this will allow you to push resolutions to 1440p and above without the significant decrease in performance and framrate you would see with less powerful chips.

Depending on which graphics cards you plan to pair with the chip, you may see perfomance up to 150 FPS and beyond on titles such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Rainbow Six Siege, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Fornite at 1440p resolution.

While the gaming performance will be impressive with the 2700x, the multi-core performance push the benefits of this chip beyond some other members of the Ryzen chipset.

If you are also interested in video editing and other programs with intensive encoding or rendering, you’ll see a massive improvement in output times due to the multi-core improvements over other similar options such as the 3600 or 3600x.

The value and price point for the amount of cores, higher clocking speeds, and multi-threaded application performance truly makes this one of the best values for a CPU in the current market. Especially when you compare the Ryzen chip to the Coffee Lake series from Intel, the bang for you buck simply can’t be overstated as it is easily head and shoulders above the competition.

As long as you are able to pair the Ryzen 7 2700x with higher-end graphics cards such as the RTX 2080 or 2080ti, RTX 2070, or a similar GPU, AAA titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or the newly annouced Valorant will easily handle the demand. This includes less demanding titles such as Fornite or League of Legends, with high FPS and reliable performance regardless of visual settings.

Gamers Input

We asked some of our gamer friends what motherboard are they currently using. Here are some of the best responses:

I am currently using the ASUS Prime X470-Pro for my motherboard. I have been using ASUS Prime now for a while as I find it to be the sweet spot between price and performance. ASUS Prime offers good VRMs, RGB integrated 2 NVMe slots and a bunch of other features. Also, the X470 Series is going to be compatible with the upcoming AMD Ryzen 5000 Series. All you need is a bios update, so it is still a viable option. But the biggest reason for the purchase of the X470 was that this is one of the few motherboards that actually goes well with a white and black setup. The lack of white motherboards on the market is astonishing. Trying to find a motherboard that will not only visually suit your setup but also offer a good price for performance ratio is a challenge.
