I recently had a conversation where an operator to create a round room with a stage in the middle. He proudly told me that it will create a sense of intimacy, because more people will be close to the stage.
Of course, that’s not true. Physical proximity is one thing, but the connection and intimacy with eye contact and listen to the sounds, sharing hopes and dreams.
Cocktail parties involve too many people in a very small room, but they rarely create memorable interactions. And the digital world removes the barriers of space, presumably by enhancing our ability to make the connection.
Very often, however, we use the digital or physical proximity to push others away instead of inviting them. We hesitate to lean or raise our hands. The speaker of the round has no choice but to turn her back half of the audience, not making eye contact and physical way to get a sense of what’s going on. While hundreds or thousands…
